CHALLENGE If you already know how to sail as a
Skipper or
Crew,
Camano Sail and Power offers a three to four hour "challenge" session
that allows experienced sailors the opportunity to gain full
accreditation as a Skipper or Crew for a much reduced fee without going
through the complete course.
Most of the time will be on the water and the balance will
be on-land for written Basic Keelboat and knot tying exams
on land. During the water time, you will be asked to act as a
keelboat skipper or effective crew from the time that we first board
our
Hobie 33 keelboat**
until we return and moor the boat. You will be expected to
prepare or help prepare (in the case of Crew) the boat for sailing, untie from the mooring, sail away
from the mooring, perform a complete series of sailing maneuvers
including heaving-to, reefing, and anchoring and return to the mooring, tie up and put the boat "to bed."
During this session, the US SAILING instructor will be asking you
questions about what you are doing, what the wind and sea are doing, and
generally checking for your understanding of what you are doing.
The complete checklist of US SAILING required knowledge can be seen here, or you can visit the
United States Sailing Association keelboat website to read and download the Basic Keelboat Certification standards.
The approximately four hour Basic Keelboat Challenge is $150.00. This includes
the text "Basic Keelboat", a one-year
membership in US SAILING and Basic Keelboat certification as a Skipper
from US SAILING or certification as Crew from Camano Sail and
Power (US SAILING does not as yet have a national "crew" certification).
TUTORIALS One-on-one sessions are available for clients who either fail the
"challenge" or who simply need some "refresher" hours to get up to
speed. We offer one-on-one sailing tutorials designed to blow-out
the cobwebs and sharpen the skills of former keelboat sailors, to
prepare them to pass the "challenge" session. These sessions will
be designed around the client's perceptions of the skills that they
need to brush up on, plus any items that the instructor thinks might
need a bit of work.
The tutorials are $50.00 per hour for one student and $40.00 per hour
each for two or more students to a maximum of four students.

**The
keelboat that we normally use for the Basic Keelboat
Certification is
a J-24. This boat is currently undergoing some renovation and in
its place we are using a Hobie 33, a 33-feet long tiller-steered,
outboard auxiliary cabin sloop which is laid out and handles very much
like the J-24, but is 9 feet longer.
This boat was designed by Hobie Alter of Hobie Cat fame and is a
very easy boat to rig and sail, even singlehanded.
