OUR STAFF
Captain Lawrence Baum is our
head instructor. He is a United
States Sailing Association licensed instructor, a lifelong sailor and boat builder and holds a U.S. Coast
Guard 50-ton Masters license for inland waters. Capt. Baum was,
prior
to moving to Camano Island, one of the head sailing instructors for the
City of Seattle Park and Recreation program where he taught for 15
years in sailing programs for people of all ages. He holds certifications from US SAILING
as a Small Boat ("dinghy") and Basic Keelboat Instructor and
is also a US SAILING Instructor Trainer in Small Boats and has tested
and certified many of the small boat instructors working in programs
all over the northwest. Camano Sail and
Power is also a Washington Fish and Wildlife licensed saltwater fishing
(and
crabbing) guide service.
Prior to moving to Camano and founding Camano Sail and Power and Lil' Cat Boat Co, Ltd.,
he was a consulting geologist in mineral exploration and mapping and a
geology professor at the Idaho College of Mines and Earth Resources,
the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil and a geology
instructor at numerous community colleges around the Puget Sound area.
Ms. Bonita ("Bonnie") MacPhail is a sailing instructional assistant at Camano Sail and Power. Bonnie first was introduced to sailing while
working at the University of Washington. She and a co-worker in medical
research had fun learning how to sail C-larks and Lasers. They spent the
summers sailing around the waters near the UW. However, Bonnie was distracted
by a job offer in Scotland and lived there for a year working in the department
of Genetics at the University of Edinburgh. When she returned to Seattle, she took sailing classes
again, and loved the reinforcement of her sailing skills. Life took a turn away from sailing, and she
raised two daughters, went back to college and earned another degree in music.
She taught piano in Seattle for several years, and now lives on Camano Island
with a growing piano practice. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to renew her sailing
skills with Camano Sail, and to combine her teaching and sailing skills.
